Barrett and Claire are playing cards on the floor when one slips through a crack in the boards and disappears into the dark below. It’s gone for good — or it would be, if help hadn’t turned up.

A gentleman in a tall hat comes along with a red umbrella and an idea: they’ll go down and get it. All it takes is getting small enough to fit.

What’s under the house turns out to be nothing like a crawlspace. It’s a cavern of a world, and the card is somewhere in it — and Barrett and Claire have to go all the way through to find their way back up.

Told in the same gentle rhyme as the rest of the series, Under the House is a story about small losses that feel enormous, brave company in dark places, and the friend who shows up without being called.
