Henry Strauss wants a treehouse. He has the spot picked out and the will to build it, but wanting a thing and getting it built are two different matters — and Henry can’t do it alone.

Then someone turns up who nobody sent for: a curious gentleman in a tall hat and coat, with a bright red umbrella tucked under his arm. His name is Random Gamp, and the umbrella is not an ordinary umbrella.
