Anna Kate has missed her boat to Spain. Her sister is waiting on the other side, the rain is starting to fall, and there’s no way across — no bicycle, no canoe, nothing but the empty dock and the river.

Then something comes drifting around the bend: a raft of rope and wood with a red umbrella at its center, and beneath it a curious stranger she’s only heard stories about. His name is Random Gamp, and the raft is called the River Kite.

What follows is a journey up through the clouds and out over rivers, trees, and fields — a flight that carries Anna Kate past her fear and shows her that nothing can hold her down.
